WALPOLE, MA -- The Wizards headed down to Walpole, MA on Wednesday to face-off against the Express for the third time this season. After splitting the first 2 matchups of the season, the boys grabbed the series lead by beating Walpole 4-3 in overtime.
"That wasn't our prettiest win of the season," said Wizards head coach and general manager Freddy Meyer. "Kory [Falite] and I are giving a lot of credit to the boys for battling the entire 60 minutes."
Matt Letmanski got the Wizards on the board first, just over a minute into the game with his 11th goal of the year. However, the Express would outshoot the Wizards 20-12 in the 2nd period and tie the game at 1 heading into the final frame. Walpole would score on the power-play a few minutes into the 3rd, but it was quickly answered with a Wizard’s power-play goal of their own from Alec DeLuca. The back and forth action continued as the Express would take the lead 3-2, with just under 3 minutes to play. That lead didn't last long as Devin Panzeca would tie the game in the final minute to send it into overtime. In overtime, Panzeca buried a feed from Letmanski, giving his team a huge victory on the road. The Wizards have now moved to 2-0-0 in overtime games this season, with Panzeca having scored both OT winners. Korbinian Lutz made 40 saves in the win, which earned him #MagicHat honors for the game. The win gives the recent EHL Goalie of the Month a record of 8-2-0 on the season.
With the win, the Wizards move up to 11-7-0 for the year, and currently sit in 3rd place of the Boston Division with 22 points. Up ahead for the Wizards is an afternoon matchup at home tomorrow against the Total Athletics Seahawks, followed by the 2nd showcase of the season in Haverhill, MA (Sunday and Monday).
